"When we first visited Grimston Court we were initially struck by the warmth of the staff and the fact they treat everyone as an individual." - Jean Farrow
As a very sociable person, losing her mobility had an upsetting impact on Mary Earnshaw.
Despite the best efforts of her daughter Jean to keep her 91-year-old mum's time occupied, it was clear that not being able to attend coffee mornings or Women's Institute meetings was affecting Mary, who lived in her own home in York.
Jean began to look for respite care for Mary and looked at a few care homes in the York area. In her opinion only one was suitable and that was Grimston Court, which is owned by Wellburn Care Homes.
Mary began going into Grimston Court for one day a week and Jean said this change of scenery had a positive impact on her mum, who would return from the home each week being "much more animated"
Unfortunately, in December 2010, Mary had an infection and a subsequent number of falls, which left Jean thinking that a longer term arrangement at Grimston Court may be necessary.
Mary is now living full-time in Grimston Court and whilst no-one has said it is a permanent arrangement she has settled in well and is enjoying the company being in a care home brings.
Jean said: "When we first visited Grimston Court we were initially struck by the warmth of the staff and the fact they treat everyone as an individual.
"We love that the home has got really nice grounds and the building itself reminds my mum of the grammar school she used to go to, so this familiarity has helped her settle.
"We visit every other day and the home is always very clean, with fresh flowers on display and absolutely no clutter.
"It is also good that so many original fixtures and fittings have been retained.
"Whilst we have deliberately not put any timescale on how long my mum will be at Grimston Court she is in the best place for her and she says herself that if she has to be anywhere, there is nowhere better."
